ELCISS aims to enhance language and communication in secondary school children with primary language and communication impairment through narrative/storytelling and vocabulary enrichment.

The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has a population of approximately 164,000 residents, of which 80% regard themselves as white British, 6.6% Asian and 9.8% Black or Black British.

The Local Education Authority (LEA) funds 10 Secondary Schools in the borough.

In 2007, across all secondary schools in the borough, the percentage of pupils who achieved 5 GCSEs at A* to C was 39.7%. This was compared to an average for England of 46.7%.

In the same year the percentage of pupils regarded as requiring Special Educational Needs (SEN) with statements or support through School Action Plus was 6.6%. This was compared to an average for England of 8.5%.

Eight Secondary Schools in the borough took part in the ELCISS Project.
