ELCISS aims to enhance language and communication in secondary school children with primary language and communication impairment through narrative/storytelling and vocabulary enrichment.

The expected outcomes/outputs and practical benefits

  • The identification of prevalence and nature of primary language impairment in a large sample of secondary school-aged students across 21 secondary schools
  • Data on the effectiveness of the intervention programmes in enhancing language and communication in language impaired secondary school students
  • The identification of those components of language which are differentially enhanced by the two therapy approaches and to assess their combined effect
  • Therapy training manuals and completed therapy packs for both programmes. These continue to be disseminated to all participating schools and disseminated nationally through inset training and internationally via conferences and paper publications
  • Increased knowledge for teaching staff of primary language impairment and strategies employed to improve language in the education context through inset training delivered to teaching staff
  • Skills and knowledge provided to TAs from participating schools in the delivery of narrative and vocabulary training. Other TAs to be included in further inset training during the dissemination process. This expertise will remain in the boroughs and is an essential aspect of the capacity building of the project
  • Publications in academic journals (SALT, education, psychology)
  • Publications in professional and parent-oriented literature and websites
  • The conclusions drawn will aim to influence future educational and SALT service delivery
